Installing roof caps

As you can see, we've made a cut 2 inches on either side of the center line of the ridge. Ridge caps should be oriented to face away from prevailing winds. Find roof panel ridge caps at lowe's today. First, we're going to put the hip cap in place and mark it so that we can prepare the end here at the eave and the top at the ridge.

Incorrectly fastened screws are the number one cause of metal roof leaks. Locate the butyl tape so that the ridge fasteners will penetrate at the center of the butyl tape once the ridge cap is in place. To install corrugated roofing, start by cutting your panels to length with an angle grinder. Lay and secure the metal panels on the other side.

Beginning at the outside edge of your roof, place each panel directly onto the purlins that are attached to the roof trusses. We recently redid the our roof with tin. Now we're ready to deal with a vented ridge cap.

Bend it over so that it covers the entire ridge. Fastening or screwing down the metal roof panels correctly is a critical, but often overlooked installation step. The ridge vent is then covered with a metal ridge cap. Install the tin panels on the other side of the roof the same way. The process to install ridge cap shingles has changed because roofing market trends have favored a new type of shingle.

A roof cap covers the ridge of a roof in order to deflect water down the sides instead of onto the roofing material. Repeat the process to finish the first side of the roof. This is the last and most crucial step in every roofing job. Although relatively straightforward in its procedure, if it is not done correctly, serious roof leaking problems will occur. This task requires working on the peak of the roof, and if you are not physically fit or able enough to do this, call in a professional and let him complete the job. Determine the right day to complete this task. The day must be warm, dry and have very little wind activity.

This choice of day is more important for safety considerations than it is for roof cap installation. Place a ladder on dry and level soil before mounting it for roof access. When carrying roof caps up the ladder, never exceed the maximum ladder weight restrictions. Drill a plumb hole into the peak. Properly seal roof with roofing material before installing cap. Use PLENTY of clear adhesive silicone caulking inside cap, around screw holes, around bottom of post, and inside the tube opening where finial enters cap.

Place caulk into the hole in the roof if installing a finial or weathervane. If installing a finial alone, press post into caulked hole in roof. If installing both a finial and roof cap, use care to assure that edges on bottom of cap will not get caught, push firmly, but not forcibly, onto roof peak. Secure with copper coated stainless steel screws in holes provided by placing 2 opposite screws to start. Drill holes if not provided. Double-check plumb and finish securing cap to roof.

F inish by placing caulking around the inside of the bushing in the cap and slide the finial down into cap and into roof. Place more caulk at the joint where the post enters the cap.
