A lot of drummers do what THEY want to do, and will just obliterate every track with constant pounding. That can really kill an atmosphere. Rob has control over this impulse, and I applaud him for that. Vocals: Stevie does the lion's share of the vocals, and has a pretty tough growl.
I wouldn't say it's a death growl, it doesn't quite of that guttural quality, but she definitely has some power. Rob contributes some vocals as well. His are a little closer to the death style. What I like about the vocals is that they bring a heaviness to the often melodic sounding lines being played. There's a little echo effect on there, or maybe a slight reverb, but not so much that it distorts the vocals. The dream-like quality I keep mentioning is also in full effect here, they sound like they're coming out of another time.
What surprised me was the clean vocals don't get worked up, it's really just one track they show up on. Stevie actually has a pretty decent singing voice. They evoke the beauty on the track they show up on. The lyrics are given depth with the vocal performance. The lyrics are very contemplative, and at the same time, very poetic. Overview: This isn't a typical doom album. At times, stoner influenced, but mostly, this band is creating something I feel is new.
There's a bright future for them, and I can't wait to see where they go. After this debut, they will most definitely be a band to watch out for. When first hearing of the band, I was a bit skeptical because of the name.
I was excited to hear the new album and can say it will be hard to forget this group again. It seems they have been refining their sound and can be a reminder not to judge a band by its name.
Their sound is so deep and menacing it just seems like there would have to be bass in the mix but Dark Castle pull it off without flaw. The tormented guttural vocals performed by Stevie and drummer Rob match the guitar tone and bring even more power to their thunderous sound.
The opener is the most memorable track on the album. The creative and versatile song writing style on this album is similar to Neurosis and Old Man Gloom. While taking influence from some of the more well know bands in the genre, Spirited Migration still offers ingenuity. Sean Moskalik. Kri Samadhi. Eric Blanchet. Robert Chrzanowski. Keith Young.
