He hopped on the ground into the sunlight. In spite of the heavy rain, the light burst over him. It was branded into his very bones. Sucking in his breath sharply, he forced himself to spread his wings and rise toward that hideous burning mass of heat.

The rain sizzled over him, spitting and hissing like an angry cat, as the large bird took flight, wings flapping hard to get height to take him into the trees. The light nearly blinded him, and inside the eagle, he shrank away from the rays, no matter how diffused by the rain. It seemed forever to cross the thirty feet, although the bird was in the trees almost immediately.

It just took a few moments to realize the sun was no longer directly on his feathers. The hissing and spitting gave way once again to the calling of the birds and monkeys, this time in sharp alarm. Two female spider monkeys, drunk on fermenting fruit stared up at him. The Amazon forest passed through eight borders, extending through the countries with its own diverse life forms. A silky anteater climbing in the branches of a tree, paused to gaze at him with a wary eye.

Bright red and blue macaws called warnings as he passed overhead, but he ignored them, expanding his circle ever wider to take in more and more territory. The eagle moved noiselessly through the forest, as high as the canopy would allow, without emerging above it, covering miles. He needed the shelter of the twisted limbs and heavy foliage to block the light.

With the eyes of the Harpy eagle he could see something as small as an inch from over two hundred yards. He could fly up to speeds of fifty miles per hour if he was in open territory and drop with dizzying speed if needed. He spotted hundreds of frogs and lizards dotting the branches and trunks as he swept by.

Snakes coiled along twisted limbs, hiding among blossoms drenched in rain. A margay shrank deeper into the foliage of a tall Kapok tree, its large eyes fixed on prey. The eagle dipped lower, inspecting the overgrown vegetation. Limestone blocks lay half buried in debris, strewn about as if by a willful hand.

A sinkhole shimmered with blue water, testifying to an underground river. The eagle continued to expand his circle, taking in more and more miles, until he found what he was looking for. The bird settled high in the branches of tall tree on the edge of a manmade clearing. A large building made of steel and bolts had been brought in piece by piece and constructed sometime in the last year. Something had blown the hole through the metal from the outside, and a fire had started.

The scent was there, although faded, as if many risings had gone by since the undead had visited this place. Still, the wail of the dead rose from the surrounding ground. The right side of the building was blackened and a hole gave glimpses of the interior. A very recent battle, perhaps in the last couple of hours had taken place here.

The sharp eyes of the eagle could see the furniture overturned inside, a desk and two cages. A body lay on the floor unmoving. Outside, two men, human, he was certain, stood outside the building in combat gear, large guns strapped to their shoulders. One tipped a bottle of water to his mouth and then stepped back into the relative shelter of the doorway, trying to avoid the steady rain. The second stood stoically, the water drenching him, as he said a few words to the first guard, before moving on to circle the building.

The eagle watched, motionless, hidden in the thick, twisted branches and umbrella leaves up above the clearing. Naked, he was thick-chested with stocky legs and heavily-muscled arms. He carried a second man over his shoulder. Blood streamed down his shoulder and back, although it was impossible to tell if it was from the unconscious man or him. Instead, he stood to one side, the muzzle of his gun barely raised, but enough to cover the newcomers.

Someone had attacked this facility and done a considerable amount of damage. Obviously the human guard was leery of the jaguar-men, but he allowed them into the building.

The second guard had hung back and covered the two shapeshifters, his finger on the trigger. Clearly, it was an uneasy truce between the two species. Dominic knew the Jaguar-men were on the verge of extinction. He had seen the decline a few hundred years earlier and knew it was inevitable.

At that time, the Carpathians had tried to warn them of what was coming. Times changed and a species had to evolve in order to survive, but the jaguar-men had refused the advice. They wanted to stay to the old ways, living deep in the forests, finding a mate, impregnating her and moving on. They were wild and bad-tempered, never able to settle. The few jaguar-men Dominic had spent any time with had tremendous feelings of entitlement and superiority.

They viewed all other species as inferior, and their women meant little more than a vessel to carry offspring. The royal family had a long history of cruelness and abuse of their women and female children, a practice the other males viewed as example and followed.

There were a few rare jaguar-men who had tried to convince the others that they needed to value their women and children, rather than treating them as property, but they were considered traitors and shunned and ridiculed, or worse, killed. In the end the Carpathians had left the jaguar-men to their own devices, knowing the species was ultimately doomed. Brodrick the tenth, a rare black jaguar led the males just as his father and his ancestors before him had done.

He was considered a difficult, brutal man responsible for the slaughter of entire villages, of the half-breeds he deemed unfit to live. It was rumored he had made an alliance with the Malinov brothers as well as the society of humans dedicated to wiping out vampires.

Dominic shook his head at the irony. The Malinovs were using both species in their war against the Carpathians. Dominic spread his wings and moved closer, tuning his hearing to catch the conversation inside the building. She went over the cliff. A second voice, one filled with pain added. Dominic watched as a large man dressed in loose jeans and an open shirt emerged from the house. His hair was long, shaggy, and very thick. Dominic knew instantly he was looking at Brodrick, the ruler of the jaguar-men.

His prince had decreed the Carpathians should leave the species to their own fate or he would have been tempted to kill the man where he stood. Brodrick was directly responsible for the deaths of countless men, women and children.

He was consumed with evil, drunk on his own power, and the belief that he was superior to all others. Brodrick looked at the two guards contemptuously. Brodrick scowled up at the rain, allowing it to pour into his face. He spit in disgust and stalked around to the side of the building where the fire had been.

Crouching he searched the ground. He was thorough about it, leaning down to sniff, using all senses to pick up the trail of his enemy. Suddenly he sat back on his heels, stiffening. The jaguar-man who had carried the wounded one hurried out, barefoot, but in jeans and pulling on a tee-shirt that strained across his chest. He took out two guards, the bullets so close together, everyone thought only one shot had been fired.

Where the hell was he? And how did he know the precise place to blow the building to free Annabelle? There were no windows.

And I'm liking this new angle so much I cannot describe. There isn't a thing I would change in either Dominic or Solange. They were absolutely perfect as individuals and equally perfect together.

True partners in all aspects of their lives, and they knew it, accepted each other flaws and all. The action scenes were great as per Ms.

Feehan's usual, the man arc is nicely evolving, there's a new angle involving royal Jaguar blood, and a promise of Zacarias' story in the future.

Dare I guess who his lifemate might be? Another keeper in this amazing series. View all 3 comments. So many years spent alone left Dominic of the Dragonseeker line with few options that he liked. Making the decision to help his race find and destroy some of their enemies seemed the most honorable way to him. Action had been taken to follow that course before he realized that he woman he had been dreaming about for so long was real.

The support and encouragement her dream companion offered So many years spent alone left Dominic of the Dragonseeker line with few options that he liked. The support and encouragement her dream companion offered was the only thing that got her through some of the tough days and nights, realizing he was there for her now in a more real way left her feeling open and vulnerable in a way she had never been before.

Their enemies turned out to be common ones, the answer to the threat facing both of their races may be with in them to handle if they can work together. Book 21 ….. Ok, predictable but I am such a Carpathians fan that I enjoyed it. I liked the tough girl Solange when we first met her and knew that if she got a story it would be fast paced and action filled, and this did not disappoint. The Dragonseeker line has also been a strong lineage but the best parts where the tender moments between these two warriors.

As always I liked the inclusion of other characters we have met before and would love to see Zacarias get his own story also and he needs it soon from the sound of it. I know I have to wait for another year for the next Carpathian book, so interested in seeing who it is for that I will have my eye one Christine Feehans website.

It dragged a bit at times, but this was an important story in the overall storyline. Shelves: read-in , paranormal , read-in , romance , read-in I absolutely adored this book.

If you have not been reading the series, that's all you need to know. I suggest you quit reading this review here and now, and go back to the beginning of the series. Go to the public library and get started! I love the way Dominic has infinite patience with Solange's insecurities, the way he will wait and let her learn something rather than trying to instruct.

He is the exact opposite of the Prince and Gregori. I don't know if it's his Dragonseeker blood, or t I absolutely adored this book. I don't know if it's his Dragonseeker blood, or the fact that he had given up on finding a lifemate, but this patience makes him the perfect mate for Solange. He appreciates her strengths, and other than bringing her to an appreciation of her softer side, he makes no effort to change who she is.

He can let her keep her warrior side, and protect without smothering. He can fight by her side. He can wait for her to learn to trust him.

A large part of the book deals with Solange's battered heart, her fear of loving because she has lost nearly everyone she ever loved, and her fear of males because of the abuse she has battled. She learns that her scars do not make her ugly. She learns to appreciate her own sensuality.

The high quality of the emotional growth she experiences put this book into the five out of five category. For those who have been following the series, the Jaguar male plot thread appears to be completed with this story. The ongoing vampires' conspiracy plot thread is expanded but not settled, I can see that it will be part of the next book.

One feature that had been missing or downplayed in earlier books is addressed here: the use of modern technology by paranormal beings. The bad guys had been compiling a database that the good guys could find useful, and Dominic had to take instruction from young Josef on how to steal the data and destroy the evildoers' network. We also learn that the vampires are utilizing satellites to track the Prince.

I also liked the scenes that include Zacarias De La Cruz. I hope he gets his happily ever after soon. Not bad for a hardcover! Another one for the keeper shelf, definitely. She finally realizes what's holding him back, and tells him to use a condom. That hadn't occurred to him, which I found hilarious.

It's cool that Solange's dominant Royal Jaguar shapeshifter blood can cure certain things, like the parasites the vampires have been infecting Carpathians with, and the black magic of the mages.

It is really cool that this quality was not lost during the conversion. I also like that the conversion affected Dominic's physiology as well as hers, the blood exchange changed him in certain ways, and he had not expected this. He is the first Carpathian for whom the conversion is a two-way street. Score one for the dominant Royal Jaguar shapeshifters! I really liked the scene where Solange talks Zacarias past his urge to turn vampire. Dominic had been prepared to take him out, but he demonstrates his trust in her abilities by holding off from that to see the result of her gambit.

Really liked how the storyline progressed. Loved how the Jaguar lineage is powerful and how the two species are brought together. Usually, it's heroine who gets changed and brought into the carpathian life, and that's true here EXCEPT our hero gets changed too!

The last sentence of this story says it all and can't help but think that maybe there is a change in store for the carpathians because of Solange After 21 books in this series and still going strong, I'm impressed that the storyline is still very good and intrigues me. There are still a few characters that I can't wait to read about and hope their books will come soon.

Jun 21, Carolyn F. I had taken a Carpathian break for awhile because I stopped liking them as much and I was crazy about these books when I began reading them. When I picked up this one, I was a little worried. But this ended up being a great book. This was about Solange, the jaguar shifter, and Dominic, the Dragonseeker. As strong as Solange is when fighting, she's very insecure about her body and her scars when it comes to romance.

This was such a nice change from the absolutely beautiful women I usually read ab I had taken a Carpathian break for awhile because I stopped liking them as much and I was crazy about these books when I began reading them. This was such a nice change from the absolutely beautiful women I usually read about.

I hope the next book is about Zacarias! He deserves to have good things happen to him! View all 4 comments. Nov 01, Candace rated it really liked it. Dominic of the Dragonseeker lineage has swallowed tainted vampire blood. He is on a suicide mission to discover and report the vampires plans, and then go out fighting or to meet the dawn.

Solange Sangria is one of the last surviving trueblood jaguar shifters. She rescues jaguar-women from the abuse and cruelty of Broderick the Terrible, her father, and his jaguar-men. She plans to kill her father, or possibly die trying.

Dominic and Solange meet in dreams, never realizing that either is real, fl Dominic of the Dragonseeker lineage has swallowed tainted vampire blood. Dominic and Solange meet in dreams, never realizing that either is real, flush and blood persons. It is not until Dominic reveals his suicide mission that Solange cries out "Don't leave me!

Solange realizes Dominic is real when she goes to Zacarias De La Cruz's aid when he is surrounded by four vampires.

She recognizes one of the vampires as her dream man. Zacarias and Dominic fight the vampires while Solange fires special crossbow arrows into two of the vampires. At the end of the battle, Solange shifts from jaguar to human and puts on her tattered clothes.

She is starting to walk away when she bumps into her Carpathian. I enjoyed meeting back up with Solange, whom I respect for her mission and her fighting ability. Dominic is the perfect lifemate for her because he is patient, steadfast and respects Solange.

The plot is good. The subplots open the series to some more books. The ending was a surprise. Overall, another terrific book by Christine Feehan. Now for Zacarias De La Cruz's book. Solange Sangria has spent her life saving other female jaguar shifter women from being kidnapped and brutalizes by her father and his gang. She has closed in on them and knows that, as she hunts them and finally faces her father, she will die.

She is determined to take him out with her though. Dominic Dragonseeker has ingested the parasites that allow vampires to recognize each other. He realizes that he is close to turning and will not infiltrate the enemy camp to learn all he can and do as muc Solange Sangria has spent her life saving other female jaguar shifter women from being kidnapped and brutalizes by her father and his gang.

He realizes that he is close to turning and will not infiltrate the enemy camp to learn all he can and do as much destruction as he can before dying. This is his last hurrah. What neither expected is to meet their lifemate on their final mission.

They have shared, what they though were, dreams with each other for sometime. They would meet in the dream realm and talk to each other.

Sharing more of themselves than they could in the real world. After all, this was just a dream. Until their dream lover became a reality. He allowed her the time become comfortable with the woman that she is and to stop hiding behind her warrior self. He knew who she was under the warrior guise. The woman she hid all her life. He treated her with such care and tenderness, allowing her the time she needed to learn about the woman that she is.

He did it with patience and humor and such sweetness. And Solange blossomed. It was about Dominic giving his woman the time and security to learn to love herself and become confident in her femininity and sensuality. I really enjoyed the relationship that they shared. I look forward to every book that comes out and I was over the moon when Dark Peril came out…which continued the story of Dominic a Carpathian from the Dragonseeker, bloodline, who had in the climax ending of Dark Slayer ingested tainted vampire blood which would identify him as a vampire to enable him infiltrate the vampire camp to find what their plan against the Carpathians and pass the information to the Prince.

It was basically a suicide mission but Dominic was tired of not being able to see in colors and feel any emotions and giving up ever finding his lifemate so this would be something he could do for his people before he went into the light to die. I was so excited that the first thing I did when I arrived home was to open the first page…but halfway through the book my interest began to wane…. What was going on???? Chapter I thought…where is this story going????

She's a strong, scarred and fights to save the lives of other jaguar women that are being relentlessly tortured and killed by the jaguar men led by her father Broderick Sangria, the cruel and evil royal blooded jaguar who had killer her entire family when she was a young girl. She is determined in her quest to kill him even if it means her death.

Both have been sharing dreams of each other and never believed that either existed. When they finally meet Dominic realizes that he at long lost has found his lifemate…. Will they overcome their obstacles and find true love and their HEA?? What did I like about it? Find him a condom….. And her love for the dragonseeker robe that suddenly materialized out of nowhere…. I wonder if Margareta, the human who is attacked by the vampires and is near death is to be his lifemate.

I 'm sure we will hear more about this phenomena …. Just a few scenes with the jaguar people and Zacarias de la Cruz. Most of the story focus on them and everything else is a quick scene which occurs for a short time and then…. The story felt rushed…no real build-up to anything. I did not sense the importance of him sacrificing himself…. I am not saying this is a bad book…..

So…am I going to buy the next book? Of course!!!! The Carpathians are part of my family and I will continue reading the next books that are published. Christine Feehan is a brilliant writer with an incredible imagination and style and I will continue building up my library with her future books. Jun 27, Camille-Dhark Nytmhare rated it it was amazing Shelves: paranormal , vampire , read-in , books-i-reviewed , carpathian.

Feehan draws a wonderful pic for us by putting as much detail and nuances into the characters, setting, movements. You feel like you are intimately involved in the scenes. Some readers may not like this type of detail but Feehan does this with such skill it is a favorite part of her books for me. This style of writing brings the characters to life and makes you care about them. The chapter poems are such a sweet touch. The action scenes in this story sets up future storylines and revelations that Feehan draws a wonderful pic for us by putting as much detail and nuances into the characters, setting, movements.
